UPSC CSE Exam Pattern, Syllabus and Preparation Strategy

Exam Pattern

Prelims (objective, for screening only): General Studies Paper I — 100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours; CSAT Paper II — comprehension, reasoning and basic numeracy, 200 marks, qualifying in nature (33% required).

Mains (descriptive, marks count toward the final merit): Essay (250 marks), General Studies I-IV (250 marks each), two Optional Subject papers (250 marks each), plus two qualifying papers in English and an Indian language (300 marks each, qualifying only).

Personality Test (Interview) — 275 marks, assessing overall suitability for a career in public service.

Eligibility

Candidates must hold a graduate degree from a recognised university. The general age limit is 21 to 32 years, with relaxations for reserved categories; general category candidates get 6 attempts, with more attempts allowed for OBC and unlimited (up to the age limit) for SC/ST candidates.

Preparation Strategy

Build a strong static-syllabus foundation first (Polity, Economy, Geography, History, Environment) using standard reference books, layer daily current affairs on top, and start answer writing practice early rather than only during the final months. Choose your Optional Subject based on genuine interest and available study material, since it carries 500 marks in Mains. Consistency across 10-12 months of structured study consistently outperforms last-minute intensity.
